Bad news. 
The rpm package can't be upgraded in place. As a workaround I upgraded to 3.4 first and then to 3.5. But this path can't be used in production.
Apart from upgrade path, squid 3.5 works fine.
We could offer it as an option to be installed manually.
Any better ideas?
